Potential NFL Star Robert Griffin III

Potential NFL Star Robert Griffin III

Robert Griffin III says he will not throw at the NFL scouting combine. I assume the reason for this is because he did not want to be over shadowed by the technical quarterback in Andrew Luck. During the NFL scouting combine he will only be […]

Championship for the New York Knicks? or Just Hype

Championship for the New York Knicks? or Just Hype

Can the New York Knicks make a run in the east? I have been playing around with this question for about a week now. It’s easy to get caught up in the aura of Jeremy Lin, but there is more to this team then Lin. They […]

Sea Devils Take a Tough Loss to The Pioneers

Sea Devils Take a Tough Loss to The Pioneers

During the pre-game shoot around the Sea Devils (11-14, 2-7) seemed focused and prepared for Spartanburg Methodist College (21-5, 7-2). The Sea Devils never stopped pushing. It just wasn’t enough as Cape Fear lost by three points, 65-68.
“We’re very close and every game that we’ve lost, we have either led or been very close,” Cape Fear head coach Ryan Mantlo said. The team responded well by playing gritty and motivated throughout the game. It was obvious the Sea Devils wanted to establish a post game, with sophomore point guard Rakeem Wilson often finding the open man down low.
Through the majority of the second half Spartanburg Methodist had control of the game, never letting the Sea devils cut the lead to less than six points. The leadership and scoring ability of Emmanuel Andrews kept the Sea Devils fighting. Andrews had 24 points, with 21 of them coming in the second half.
With about three minutes to go in the game the Sea Devils made their run, cutting the lead to two. Spartanburg Methodist could almost see the game slipping away but it was a little too late for the Sea Devils. Down by three points with 1.2 seconds left, Emmanuel Andrews put up a half court shot that just missed off the rim.
“There is no doubt we’re getting better, I still have high expectations for this team. I plan to be in Kansas still,” Mantlo said post game.
If you want to catch your Cape Fear Community College Sea Devils in action. They will be home vs. Denmark Technical Friday February 24th, with game time at 7 p.m. So come out and support your Sea Devils.

Has Tiger Woods Lost the Touch?

Has Tiger Woods Lost the Touch?

After watching the pebble beach pro-am yesterday, I could not help but wonder what happened to the “old” Tiger Woods. He couldn’t putt the ball in the hole. Tiger seemed frustrated and off balance throughout. “I didn’t hit it as bad as the score indicated, […]

CFCC vs. USC Sumter a NJCAA Showdown

CFCC vs. USC Sumter a NJCAA Showdown

Before the game I had a chance to speak with head coach RyanMantlo asking him if there were any different strategies since the last gameagainst USC Sumter, he said “You know I think it’s just the same thing, boilsdown to us playing and executing and just focusing on the small things”.
After the National Anthem both teams were fired up and readyfor action Friday night. Cape Fear controlled the pace throughout the firsthalf. The ball movement was impeccable, and they seemed to keep USC Sumter offbalance.
The majority of the first half the Sea Devils bench waschanting “defense” and the players really responded holding USC Sumter to only15 points.
The players had an extended halftime because of homecomingnight. Both teams seemed to come out of the game a little out of sync and cold. But nonetheless, Cape Fear got things rolling in no time.
One of the big contributors Friday night was the 6-foot-7-inchfreshman, Tony Menton. He had been averaging 4.5 points a game, but this gamewas different. Menton turned it on, having a big game scoring a team high 19points. Menton was everywhere, catching a beautiful lob in the second half fromEmmanuel Andrews causing the entire gym to erupt.
Cape Fear was up by 20 points the majority of the secondhalf, with USC Sumter attempting to make a few late game runs, but could neverpull it together.
As you watched the game you could see Cape Fear gettingtired. Coach Mantlo called a few timeouts to gather his team, giving them a fewwords of motivation. This pushed his team to dig deep and finish the gamestrong. Coach Mantlo said post game, “I think that we got a little tired at theend, but it was a good all around effort. We need a win. I’m really happy.”
The final score was 69-50 giving Cape Fear a huge win that willboost the team’s moral, giving them a chance for a late season run.
If you want to catch the Sea Devils men’s basketball team inaction, they are on a home stretch until February 29th. So come outand support your Sea Devils.

Kobe Bryant is Truly One of The Greats

Kobe Bryant is Truly One of The Greats

Kobe Bryant is hands down one of the best basketball playersto ever grace the NBA. He has broken most records there are to break in thestaples center.
When Kobe came into the NBA as a young seventeen year oldhigh school athlete, it was unsure the impact he would make. Soon everyonewould know what this young kid could do. As a rookie Bryant entered the NBAdunk contest impressing judges as he flew his way to a NBA Slam Dunk ContestTrophy.
The Slam Dunk Trophy was just the beginning. Bryant wouldcontinue his dominance four years later as he teamed up with fellow all starShaquille O’Neil.  The dynamic duo ledthe Lakers to a three peat; and are still being debated today, as the best onetwo punch the NBA had ever seen.
Kobe throughout his career with the Los Angeles Lakers hasaveraged 25 points a game, 5 rebounds, and 5 assist. Not to mention he issecond all time for most points scored in a single game (81). But the stats donot say enough about Bryant. The poise he shows in the most clutch situationsis what makes him “Jordan like” if you will. There was no situation or momentwhere the lights where too bright for Bryant to handle.
As Bryant approaches the latter part of his career, you areseeing him develop into a smarter player; doing things in a veteran manner. After Kobe surpassed Shaquille O’Neil last night vs. the Philadelphia 76er’syou could see a since of accomplishment he had overcome him. As Derek Fisher(the point guard who has been on the same team as Bryant for many of the LakersChampionships) embraced Bryant with an emotional hug, you could see Bryantrealize what an amazing career he has had.
As we look at the end of Bryant’s career approaching inthe next 3-4 years, it’s time to appreciate the absolute talent and leadershipBryant displays on a regular basis. This is a legend of the game and we as NBAfans are getting to witness it. In twenty years when the next big name hits theNBA we will tell the new age fans “man, he was nothing like Kobe”.
